Here at Tack Track, we’re just as passionate about keeping your tack safe as you are. But why stop at security?
Cleaning and nourishing your leather products will ensure longevity and protection from the elements and just like your skin leather needs to be looked after and maintained!
Oiling a new saddle
When you purchase a new saddle, giving it a fresh oil will assist with softening the leather and helping the saddle mold to your body.
Note: Always follow the saddle manufacturer’s recommendations as some saddles made with suede seats or calf skin may not be able to be oiled.
Ensure you use a quality oil specifically made for saddles.
Using a clean paintbrush paint the oil all over the saddle, including the underside, the seat (only if in plain leather) and under the flaps and allow the oil to soak into the saddle.
Do not oil girth points as they are made from a different type of leather which needs leather balm not oil, this can make them stretch more easily.

Cleaning a Saddle
It’s important to regularly clean and maintain your saddle. Saddles will become dirty with dust from arenas and sweat from your horse, over time these small amounts of grime can wear & create rub marks on your leather. Regularly cleaning your saddle also enables you to check for any points of wear that may need attention.
Always clean your saddle with quality leather soap. Liquid leather soap makes the process quicker and easier. Using a damp cloth and the soap work it into the whole saddle including the girth points to remove any grime and sweat.
Once you have cleaned the saddle with the liquid saddle soap follow up with a quality leather balm. Leather balms prevent leather like your skin from going dry and cracking. It’s important to keep your saddle nourished.
Rub the balm over the whole saddle including the girth points.
Again we recommend always following the saddle manufacturer’s recommendations on which products to use to suit the type of leather the saddle is made from.

Seasonal Smarts: Adapting Your Care Routine
Seasonal changes demand adjustments in your tack care routine:
- Wet Seasons: Moisture is the enemy. Post-ride, always dry your tack with a soft cloth. Avoid storing in damp areas and consider a dehumidifier for your tack room. Leather waterproofing sprays can be a game-changer.
- Hot Weather: Heat can make leather brittle. Store your tack away from direct sunlight and consider treating it with a UV protectant spray to prevent fading and drying.
- Cold Conditions: Cold can make leather stiff and more prone to cracking. Keep your tack in a temperature-controlled environment and use a leather conditioner designed for cold weather, which can help maintain flexibility.
Regular Check-Ups: The Key to Longevity
Don’t wait for visible wear and tear. Regular inspections can catch issues like loose stitching or worn areas before they become major problems. Pay special attention to stress points such as buckle holes and attachment sites.
Common Queries Answered
- Can I use household cleaners on my tack? Absolutely not. Household cleaners can contain harsh chemicals that may damage leather. Stick to cleaners specifically designed for leather tack.
- How often should I clean my tack? At a minimum, give your tack a basic wipe down after every ride to remove dirt and sweat. A deeper clean and conditioning session every few weeks can help maintain its condition and longevity. Keep in mind the climate and season, in the summer tack will need more moisture from conditioners to match the drier climate.
- What about mould and mildew? If your tack gets mouldy, it’s crucial to clean it off as soon as possible with a mixture designed for leather. Keep your storage area well-ventilated and consider using silica gel packets to help absorb excess moisture.
