Note: All Saddlery is marked at your own risk and the following are suggestions only. We only recommend person’s over 18 years of age handle these tools.

The best place to mark the unique tracking number on the equipment is somewhere not visible when using the equipment on your horse, whilst also not in an area where there is a lot of contact/wear as this will wear the number off quite quickly, for example, avoid areas where your leg may sit on your saddle when riding.

Please be aware of similar numbers & letters when marking your tack.
Ø / O and 1 / I to clearly identify which one you are using.

There are 4 main options when choosing which tool to use to mark the unique tracking number on your tack: Permanent Markers, Leather Punch Stamp Set, Pyrography Pen or Engraving Pen.

Some gear will have a few options for whether to write, engrave or stamp the unique tracking number. You can choose which option suits you, you may not have clear handwriting & prefer the leather stamp, or not be confident with tools, and prefer the engraving pen or permanent marker; other tack may only have one option.

Which tool to use?

Leather: Leather Punch Stamp Set or Pyrography Pen. Please note, older leather is quite hard to stamp clearly & we would recommend using the pyrography pen or engraving pen

Metal: Engraving Pen

Fabric: Permanent Marker

PVC: Engraving Pen or Permanent Marker

Equi-leather: Engraving Pen

Equi-Suede & Equi-Fabric: Pyrography Pen or Engraving Pen

Leather Punch Stamp Set

  1. We would recommend using a piece of masking tape or similar, to give yourself a guide & straight line to follow when marking your leather.
  2. Wet the area of leather using a sponge & clean water. Please note: some leather can leave watermarks when it has been wet. Test your leather for watermarks in an inconspicuous spot before wetting for stamps.
  3. Select the letter/number from the set, place on the masking tape line with the letter/number on the bar facing you (please be aware 6 & 9 share the same bar, make sure you have the number up the correct way prior to stamping).
  4. Once the letter/number is in place hit the end of the bar with a standard hammer 2 times with light-medium force.
  5. Select the next letter/number & repeat step 3 & 4 for the remainder of the unique tracking number.
  6. Dry any excess water, then treat with leather conditioner or oil.

Pyrography Pen

  1. We recommend practicing writing with the pyrography pen prior to marking your tack. The pen is easy to use but it is bulkier than a normal pen and you also need to be careful of burns as the pen does get very hot.
  2. Find a burn proof surface to set your pyrography pen on the holder provided (tile, concrete, bricks etc), plug into power & wait for the pen to heat up.
  3. We would recommend using a piece of masking tape or similar, to give yourself a guide & straight line to follow when marking your tack.
  4. Write the unique tracking number using very light pressure on the pen. Depending on the material you are marking, the pen can burn in very easily. We would recommend writing lightly and then repeat over if needed. You will learn how each material burns as you start using the pyrography pen more often.

Engraving Pen

  1. We recommend practicing writing with the engraving pen prior to marking your tack. The pen is easy to use but it does vibrate and feel a bit different to writing with an ordinary pen/marker.
  2. We would recommend using a piece of masking tape or similar, to give yourself a guide & straight line to follow when marking your tack.
  3. Write the unique tracking number using light pressure on the pen. Depending on the material you are marking, more pressure may need to be applied or writing over each letter/number until the desired thickness has been achieved.

Where do I mark my tack?

English & Stock Saddles

Stirrup Bar  if easily accessible, on the near side lift the skirt & use the engraving pen to write the unique identification number in the metal. This option will be the most long lasting option compared to stamping the leather.

Sweat Flap if you would prefer to stamp the leather or you can’t access the stirrup bar, lift the near side flap & mark your unique tracking number on the sweat flap along the edge toward the rear of the sweat flap. For monoflap saddles mark on the inside of the near side flap towards the rear of the flap. Please be careful if stamping the inside of the flap as stamping too hard could result in marks showing on the outside of the flap.

Western / Fender Saddles

Skirt depending on the style of saddle either lift the near side seat jockey or fender and mark your unique tracking number in an area not visible when using the saddle. Some saddles don’t have any area of the skirt that can be marked in a non-visible area, try find an area at the top of the fender under the seat jockey that isn’t visible when using the saddle.

Bridles

Inside the head piece towards the near side. Bridles can be dismantled into quite a few pieces, if you would like to mark each piece individually, please register each piece separately to obtain an individual number for each piece. We don’t recommend engraving any parts of the bit that will be inside your horse’s mouth as it could cause your horse discomfort.

Horse Rugs

Along the neck-line on the inside or outside of the rug on the near side.

Halters

Gullet piece or connecting piece.

Stirrups / Tack with multiple separate parts

If registering stirrups separately to the saddle, engrave both stirrups with the same registration number. Follow the same process for stirrup leathers, exercise boots etc.
